Olga Sutyrina, 2020 MSc graduate | Schlumberger, Research Scientist
Meet Olga Sutyrina, Skoltech MSc graduate and Research Scientist at Schlumberger — a company that develops world-leading upstream oil and gas software and digital solutions. Olga was deliberate about getting to this position and made sure to gain all the necessary experience before and during her studies at Skoltech. To learn more, read her story!
the journey to Skoltech
I found out about Skoltech shortly before the admission deadline. At that time I was working as the engineer of strength calculations, built models of elements of rocket systems in Ansys, and made conclusions about the reliability of parts of systems. I had worked there for about 1 year but wanted to change my direction and gain experience in tasks of artificial intelligence. The opportunity to make an individual plan of study at Skoltech seemed especially attractive and I decided to try to enter. I didn't regret it for a second!

My first education was the specialist program in BMSTU. I graduated from the Mechanical engineering major and I decided to enroll in the Engineering Systems program at Skoltech. I would say I was lucky to get in, because I met a lot of talented and strong students during the selection stage. Needless to say, it was quite a challenging selection process.

For the next two years, I was a student of Assistant Professor Tatiana Podladchikova at the Skoltech Space Center. Eventually, we created a really good project about solar activity.

Engineering Systems
This program combines the study of the general principles of complex engineering system construction with participation in satellite, drone and robotic systems-building projects. The program is also aimed to provide the fundamental skills in data analysis for the development of complex system applications fostering the synergies and interdependencies between engineering, industry and space science (satellite imagery and communications, satellite navigation, remote sensing and in-situ data of space weather). career path
I am a research scientist at the Schlumberger Research Center. This turn in my life was a big surprise for me :) The job opening (which I found on hh.ru) seemed very interesting and relevant for me at the time: the company was looking for a researcher who could combine engineering and artificial intelligence technologies. Thanks to my studies at Skoltech, I knew both.

Before I received the job offer, I had 3 interviews in Schlumberger. At the last meeting with the research group, I presented the projects that I was engaged in at Skoltech. The most interesting one for the team was my project on machine learning. Also, I had to deliver the presentation in English, and thankfully I had enough practice of that at Skoltech!

typical day at work
At the moment, I work on virtual flow metering in smart wells to optimize its production. Despite the decent performed experience in this topic, the problem is hot and experts are very valuable.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our office has been working remotely, but immune employees are able to return to the office. Meetings with my manager and research group are via video call. The level of technology development and management of Schlumberger is very high and allows you to get support and feedback throughout the entire workday.

Thanks to Skoltech, I actively use the skills in machine learning and deep learning in my work, as well as my experience in crafting high-quality presentations and knowledge of English.
advice to new students
I would call Skoltech the accelerator of personal growth. So my advice to future students is to not be afraid of anything.

At first sight, Skoltech's curriculum is very intensive and complicated. Some students even have doubts of passing such popular courses as Machine Learning. But I assure you, such a shake-up expands your limitations, so the problems that seemed to you difficult before, become ridiculous. Not even the best online course can immerse you in that incredible atmosphere of co-creation and engagement that's present at Skoltech.

My final advice is this: set yourself ambitious goals and run to them as hard as you can.
